Client Profile:
 | Kansas City-based manufacturing operation with 10 offices
in other states, 2 in Kansas |
 | Corporate office contained approximately 130 users |
 | No existing Wide Area Network (WAN), minimal security in place |
Project Objectives:
 | DVITS to probe security, profile recommendations which
would improve overall security posture |
 | Design an integrated Wide Area Network (WAN) which did not
utilize expensive leased lines |
 | Ensure that perimeter security would be strong enough to
prevent successful external attack, but was designed in such a way to allow
remote users to access the corporate LAN using an encrypted VPN connection |
 | Ensure the business' 12 remote locations were tied together
in a WAN which was transparent to all users |
Project Results:
 | DVITS probed security and documented a number of
significant external security shortcomings to include open NETBIOS ports,
WAN locations not firewall protected, and network devices improperly secured
from attack |
 | Based upon the results of the probe, an overall security
plan was submitted for the client's review |
 | DVITS set up and tested all WAN and security components in
our labs for customer approval prior to deployment |
 | Upon approval of the plan, the perimeter security was
implemented using VPN firewalls to allow for 100% encrypted, authenticated
traffic between locations |
 | The entire corporation was connected into a WAN over a
24-hour period without the use of leased lines |
 | The customer estimates the VPN-based WAN as designed saved
the corporation $5000-6500 per month (i.e. over $60,000 per year) |
 | Administration is performed 100% from the corporate office,
thus minimizing personnel costs for remote offices and travel costs for IT
staff |
